What's the difference between ISBN-10 and ISBN-13?
ISBN-13 is the current 13-digit format. ISBN-10 is the older 10-digit format, used for ISBNs assigned before 2007. Since January 1, 2007, every new ISBN has 13 digits.
| ISBN-10 | ISBN-13 | |
|---|---|---|
| Digits | 10 | 13 |
| Used for | ISBNs assigned before 2007 | All ISBNs assigned since 2007 |
| Prefix | None | 978 or 979 |
| Check digit | 0 to 9, or X for 10 | 0 to 9 |
Every ISBN-10 has an ISBN-13 version: add 978 at the start and recalculate the check digit. ISBNs starting with 979 only exist as ISBN-13, so they have no ISBN-10 version.
Our ISBNs start with 979, so they're ISBN-13 only. They're fully valid and accepted by all major retailers and platforms. See Why does my ISBN start with 979?.
