Do I need an ISBN for my ebook?

It depends on the platform. Some platforms require an ISBN for an ebook, others don't. Where it's optional, including Amazon KDP, you can still use one.

If you use an ISBN for your ebook, it needs its own ISBN, separate from your print editions. KDP's free ISBN only covers paperbacks and hardcovers, so it can't be used for an ebook.

Our ISBNs work for ebooks on Amazon KDP, Apple Books, Kobo and the other platforms in Which platforms accept your ISBNs?. Once you register your ebook, it also appears on Bookwire, the public ISBN database.
